We are a congenial group of 13 Physicians (3 males and 10 females) with a wide range of ages and interests.
We believe that we can teach residents how to survive in the Ontario medical world in 2015 and beyond. We have a winning formula of mutual respect and fun and we strive to provide excellent comprehensive patient care. Our group was started 45 years ago by Dr. Erik Braaten and Dr. Alvin Kelly and has gradually grown to our present size. We have RN’s, a palliative care RN, a business manager and wonderful reception staff.
Our group provides full comprehensive care to over 12,000 patients. 5 of our 13 physicians provide intrapartum care. All of us do prenatal and postnatal care and have hospital privileges to do full MRP care for our postnatal and palliative patients admitted to Brampton Civic Hospital plus we do supportive care on all of our other inpatients. All physicians provide palliative care in collaboration with our palliative care nurse specialist and we care for at least 80 palliative patients in the community for whom we do housecalls. Each of us does hospital rounds for the group on a weekly rotating basis when it is our weekend on call.
We provide Walk-In service to our rostered patients Monday to Friday 3-730 pm and on the weekend days patients are seen in the office for urgent care. We are a Family Health Organization. We converted to full EMR with the P and P, CIS system in June 2005 and our residents tell us that the system is very user friendly and easy to learn. We have the UpToDate resource on every computer in the office.
We have physicians who have expertise in ED medicine, Travel Insurance medicine, Ethics, Practice Management, and Palliative care. We have a PBSG group which the whole group takes part in and our residents enjoy. We also help each resident create his/her own roster of patients under supervision of a preceptor. Our family physicians and staff enjoy teaching and mentoring residents. Many of our doctors are the Behavioral Science and EBM tutors within the residency program. We have teachers of OB procedures, global health and exam preparations to name only a few. Our physicians volunteer many hours to McMaster's family medicine teaching program and as well as being patient centred they are also learner centred to help you get the most out of your residency program. Residents are invited to most of our business meetings so that they can learn the practice management skills they'll need when they finish our program.
From May 1995 until 2008 we have taught over 100 students from University of Toronto. We have been teaching with McMaster since the FMTC started in Brampton in 2008 and continue to learn with our residents. We teach 3 fulltime family medicine residents at a time and we also have medical students doing electives in palliative care and family medicine. Our residents give us feedback and they seem to be very pleased by the close proximity of our practice to the hospital, ease of accessibility into our facility and the flexibility they encounter from Brameast in helping to organize and accommodate horizontal rotations. We hope you will come and check us out!
