Emergency Medicine
At William Osler Health Centre we have 2 Emergency Departments namely : Brampton Civic Hospital and Etobicoke General Hospital. Both hospitals have an extremely busy, high-acuity urban emergency department. The resident will be exposed to a wide variety of clinical encounters, including major trauma, advanced cardiac resuscitation, pediatrics and complex medical patients; in addition, there is a large volume of minor trauma and a significant opportunity to hone procedural skills.
The emergency medicine clinical teaching units have a dedicated group of experienced physicians who are enthusiastic about teaching. Residents will have the opportunity to work one on one with a number of different clinicians during their rotation. The size of the CTU ensure that there will be little or no overlap with other learners, so that the resident is free to participate in the care of any patient who presents to the ED during their shift. Residents will also have the opportunity to go on ambulance transfers with critically ill patients if they wish.
The shift schedule in emergency medicine is very generous, offering a considerable amount of free time; this will give the resident the opportunity to read around cases, pursue other academic interests, and enjoy life outside residency. We recognize that the practice in our ED is intense and emotionally demanding, and we urge residents to use their time in between shifts to recharge and relax.
