Evidence Based Medicine
The ability to critically evaluate medical literature is skill that all family physicians require. Being able to evaluate and interpret new medical knowledge is essential to both academic medical pursuits and daily clinical decision making.
Residents will gain skills in critical appraisal through small interactive evidence based medicine sessions geared towards answering specific clinical questions about diagnosis, therapy, prognosis, and harm. Sessions will occur every 2 weeks throughout the year on Monday mornings from 0800-0930, giving residents multiple opportunities to guide the critique of articles they choose to evaluate. Introductory sessions on the practice of evidence based medicine, study designs, and statistics will be presented by the EBM tutors.
Each resident is required to complete one EBM assignment in their first year, which will assesses understanding of the basic concepts of asking good clinical questions, searching the literature, and critically appraising an article/information in order to answer the question
