Internal Medicine
First Year- 2 full months of Internal Medicine:
For one of the two months the R1 resident will be affiliated with 1-2 hospitalists on the Medical Wards. Each resident will be responsible for 3-5 patients depending on the complexity of the patients. They will admit from Emergency Department during the day under the supervision of the General Internal Medicine physician (GIM) and the Emergency department Physicians and then follow these admitted patients under the supervision of the hospitalists. Residents will have first call to the floor for any of their admitted patients and first call to the Emergency Department to admit patients.
For the other month the R1 resident will be attached to two of our GIMs. The resident will work with the GIMs in the Urgent Medical Clinics and doing consultations throughout the hospital (ED, pre-op, post-op, ICU etc). The Resident will spend 1-2 afternoons per week in specialty outpatient clinics under the supervision of the specialist running the clinic. This schedule will be decided by the GIM and the resident. The compulsory clinics are cardiology, respirology, and neurology and the optional clinics are endocrinology/DM, infectious diseases, nephrology, gastroenterology, and
hematology/oncology.
The resident will be on call a maximum of 1 out of 5 nights with the GIM supervising, seeing patients in the ED, ICU and CCU and on the medical wards.
Second Year
– 1-2 months Internal medicine/Surgery Selective
Options include rotations in Palliative Care, Oncology, ICU, CCU
- Ambulatory Internal Medicine Clinics; including Urgent Care
- Specialty outpatient clinics WOHC
- Community specialist clinics
- Also available is a 1-2 months of more intensive inpatient Hospitalist or GIM experience (offered especially for those who plan to be MRP on their patients in hospital)
During their rotation students will attend Educational Rounds:

Internal Medicine Rounds for residents weekly Tuesday at noon with lunch; residents can skype in if they are remote to BCH

Breakfast with the Internists; a Thursday morning monthly meeting

Internist Specialty rounds every other Wednesday noon hour

Monthly Hospitalist journal club

Family Medicine meeting and education; 1st Wed of each month @0800
