Obstetrics and Gynecology

The Labour and Delivery department at Brampton Civic Hospital is one of the busiest across Ontario. Obstetrics through William Osler provides an incredible opportunity to learn, be part of and acquire the skill set that is required to perform uncomplicated and complicated vaginal deliveries. Residents will complete a 2 month block in Obstetrics and Gynecology during their 1st year.

Brampton Civic Hospital is a Regional Centre for Maternal Newborn and Children’s Health Services. At approximately 4500 births per year, (nearly 10% of all births in the GTA), residents have ample opportunity to become proficient in family medicine specialized obstetrical care. Many interesting cases are seen and managed as we are home to an advanced Level II NICU, and a high risk maternity clinic. The 24/7 inpatient hospital team involves an Obstetrician, a Rota doctor from the Primary Care Obstetrics Group, an in-house Anesthetist and a Paediatrician. As well we are pleased to have a strong complement of experienced Labour and Delivery Nurses who have been applauded for their excellent teaching abilities.

Accessibility, volume, a supportive learning environment and amazing teachers are keys to success. Along with obstetrical deliveries, residents are also highly integrated in triage assessments, early pregnancy clinical issues, c-sections, post partum/neonatal evaluations, and gynecological emergencies. We have a comprehensive obstetrical unit and the sky is truly the limit when learning Obstetrics at William Osler!

Gynecology clinics are self directed learning experiences that the resident sets up with a specialist of his or her choice. Residents choose 6-8 gynecology clinic experiences. Clinics can include colposcopy, endometrial biopsies, IUD insertion, infertility, and routine gynecologic care.

There is also an opportunity to attend educational rounds; Obstetrical Rounds and Women’s Health Rounds are each held on a monthly basis.
