Obstetrics and Gynecology

The Labour and Delivery department at Brampton Civic Hospital is one of the busiest in Southern Ontario. Ontario’s newest hospital is state of the art, designed with patient care in mind.  It is a Regional Centre for Maternal Newborn and Children’s Health Services.  At approximately 4500 births per year, (nearly 10% of all births in the GTA), residents have ample opportunity to get hands on experience and become proficient in obstetrical care. Many interesting cases are seen and managed as we are home to an advanced  Level II NICU, and a high risk maternity clinic. Residents complete a 2 month block in Obstetrics and Gynecology. During this time, residents will have experience with labour, delivery, caesarean section assisting and newborn care, as well as many opportunities to participate in gynecology clinics. There is also an opportunity to see patients in the Emergency Department when on call with the Obstetrician. Gynecology clinics are self directed learning experiences that the resident sets up with a specialist of her or his choice. Residents choose 6-8 gynecology clinic experiences. Clinics can include colposcopy, endometrial biopsies, IUD insertion, infertility, and routine gynecologic care.

There is also an opportunity to attend educational rounds; Obstetrical Rounds and Women’s Health Rounds which are each held on a monthly basis. The Resident is part of a multidisciplinary team that attends to obstetrical patients. This team involves the Obstetrician, the Family Medicine Rota doctor providing Obstetrical care, the in-house Anesthetist and the  Paediatrician. As well we are pleased to have a strong complement of experienced Labour and Delivery Nurses who have been applauded for their excellent teaching abilities.
